Turner Construction Company on Tuesday said it has officially broken ground on the $780 million stadium for Major League Soccer (MLS) team New York City FC.
Etihad Park, located in Willets Point, Queens, is being financed by the team and will be the first soccer-specific stadium in New York City. In addition, the HOK-designed 25,000-seat, 610,000-square-foot venue will be fully electric, another first for the city and the MLS.
Also part of the development team is Queens Development Group, a joint venture between real estate firm The Related Cos. and Sterling Equities.
The joint venture is driving the redevelopment of Willets Point, which, in addition to the stadium, will include an affordable housing component with 2,500 units; a new 650-seat public school; a new hotel with up to 250 rooms; and more than 150,000 square feet of public space, according to Related.
The Willets Point redevelopment could generate as much as $6 billion of economic activity and create 14,200 construction jobs, the developer said.
Project officials said the stadium should be open in time for the 2027 MLS season.
Sounds like cool project. Wonder if any public funds were used for this project.
That’s nice.

Just in time for the Club World Cup! Do you know if it will be used in this tournament? The news doesn't mention it.
Apparently not! Maybe in the 2026 World Cup.

Its interesting how private projects seem to get off the ground so quick compared to public peojects. What are public projects doing wrong? Maybe too many chefs in the kitchen?
