There are two kinds of people in the world, those who believe in naps and those who don’t.
I belong to the former camp. Late Friday afternoons are a sacred space because I get to nap for 45-60 mins in my empty home. Just the whirring of the fan. Bliss.
I’m a bit embarrassed to state that my nap usually happens after drinking my once-a-week indulgence of Japanese beer. Maybe that’s why I sleep so unobstructed by thoughts of life.
As it is, I feel like I have derived a second wind to deal with tonight’s parenting. That’s awesome.1
Do you nap?

Footnotes

  1. The common phrase heard around the water cooler and the school lockers is TGIF (Thank God It’s Friday). In the UK and Australia, they have a different term called POETS day (Piss Off Early Tomorrow’s Saturday.) So, POETS!

I belong to the latter camp.
You mean the former camp?
I do believe in its benefits. Unfortunately, i never made time for it or inserted it in my routine. I briefly did when my son used to nap himself as a baby. That peace has sailed now~~

Nice catch! Edited.
I actually assumed that you work from home and get to nap before continuing your work. I think it’s because you might sometimes work for an hour on your Daily Maths puzzle, and I don’t see how it’s something that can be done at the workplace haha

Haha, one of the perks of academia. I get to make my own work hours.
Also one of the curses, it never feels like I'm "off the job". Its Friday night, my son is in bed, and I know I'll likely be working on a paper until 1am.

I am in the latter camp. I never take a nap during the day. If I have a nap during the day, I have trouble sleeping at night.

i have been a lifelong napper and it's the best thing ever. my only thing close to a superpower is, i can take a nap almost on command.
i especially find at almost 40, if I'm not getting at least 7+ hours, my mental and general performance is shit, anything below 7 and a nap is a literal must. A quote i am reminded of - 'People who can not find time for rest, sooner or later, will have to find time for illness.' IMO a nap is a pretty good rest.
when i was a teenager studying Russian at home, i would sometimes literally stop mid-reading something, nap for 30-40 minutes, then pick right back up, totally refreshed. i think the micro sleep also helped me retain more too.

LOVE that quote.
If you're not paying for health (gym, food etc), you're paying with illness!

important to remember in today's hustle culture i think

Not anymore but I used to.

No, 100% don't believe in them.
They happen, roughly once every 2 months, and I always feel like shit after.
Sleeping is for nighttime.

Since i had my kids, yes, i started to take a nap with them.. Problem is, now i feel the need to nap every day its not office day.. Im worried i messed up my internal clock.. Also, now as they grow older and dont need a nap, i get grumpy if i miss my nap.. dammit

I try not to but if I do it’s only like a 20 min nap

Yeah, reading papers always puts me to sleep—it’s like magic!
reply
Absolutely! I take naps while studying because they help my brain remember things better. But my naps are usually very short, like 25 minutes to a maximum of 35.
