The decline is substantial. In the United States, the death rate dropped from over 500 per 100,000 people in 1950 to under 150 in 2021 — a four-fold decline. The reduction in France and the United Kingdom was even greater, with death rates falling five-fold.

Yeah, I think smoking decline is a big cause of this.

Is this why people are so much sicker, now? They would just have been dead 50 years ago.

I assume that 50 years ago, people would have died from certain illnesses as well. Or a bullet. Or hardwork.

That first point would fit into the hypothesis. I'm not sure what the other two are about.
