I think there's a bit of misplaced patriotism that makes people feel like the lives of their country are more important than the lives of people in another country.
Really, the truth. People can either choose humanity or they can be patriotic; sadly, most choose patriotism, and that too is false and misguided.
Agreed, it's not the soldiers' fault they're just following stupid orders, like they're machines made by warmongers who don’t care about the consequences or they don't give a fuck despite knowing the consequences.
