I teach college at a large non-elite state university. I'd say ChatGPT will outperform about 98% of them on most knowledge-based tasks. Especially with the new reasoning models that allow the AI to check its own work.
Not surprised.

I sometimes wonder why I'm even doing this. But individually, it's very rational (nice hours, good pension, etc.)

Well, I can tell you that an instructor/teacher/prof that actually cares and strives to be creative and actually teach is of massive value. I had only one in my time in college that was worth much of anything. It still blows my mind how teachers can take things as interesting as history and economics and make them so unbearable to learn.
