I read this article and learned the middle class Chinese citizens are struggling. Reading this showcased the economic struggles that we all share that the main stream media and war hawks conveniently leave out. I found myself having empathy for this woman.
The woman featured on the article has a master's degree from a prestigious university but because the Chinese economy is so tight she can't find a job. Her parents were wiped out during the recent real estate crash so they can't help much and the hope of having kids is fleeting due to the cost of living in Beijing. Even if she married a man both of their incomes would make it hard for them to get ahead.
This is exactly what most Americans are experiencing as well. And yet we are constantly told that China is a rising power and they are doing so much better than Americans. Americans are fat, lazy, and sick while Chinese are kicking our asses in everything. Then the war hawks chime in and say war this and war that and China is here to end us and I think; if China is so great why can't this woman find a job? How did her parents get wiped out?
Not to sound cliché but are we witnessing the impacts of a global debt bubble? No one has any money cost of living is fleeting and almost feels like no way out? For both Americans and Chinese citizens.
Hopefully this Chinese woman can find a job and start a family but the odds are against her. Tariffs, recession, and population decline are significant head winds she has to face. Maybe she should buy bitcoin?
China wants to compete USA even in cost of groceries. I watched a video where I came to know that Chinese people have to pay almost a yen for 1 km drive.

So I was thinking that you were probably right re: US money vs cost of living.
US BLS reports unemployment on the low end, so relatively, there shouldn't be a huge unemployment issue, according to that.
So then it must be cost of living. But, digging a bit, over the past 15years, wages seem to outperform CPI (urban) according to FRED
Thus, for the US side of this story, I'm wondering what drives this gap between perception and stats? Are the stats meddled with? Are people that experience hardship much more visible/vocal than at least an equal amount of people that are doing really well for themselves?

As you say, it's a bunch of warhawk BS. Chinese people and Americans tend to get along very well. It's just our evil governments that have beef with each other.

Their name for us is "beautiful flower country." We have always gotten along.
