I remember that the newly minted adult women wore kimono that were specially made for this day. Long, long sleeved kimono. They had their hair, and faces (all white with really startlingly red lipstick) done at the salon and got dressed up, with professional assistance in their kimono. All of the accessories, obi and such were done up and they went out for the celebration, then walked around town. A beautiful flight of butterflies.
