When I was a child I used to bike a lot on the hills near my neighborhood and beyond. When I was around my 20s I came to know about triathlon and start practicing it, after a few years I had some mechanical issues in my legs and kind of stopped doing sports in general. Lately i started all over but instead of biking running and swimming, just biking but biking not high intensity in a flat road, but on hills and mountains which make all the difference and is making my leg mechanics good again.
My whole point is it's much easier to hand out with others training for triathlon, but real proof of work in the case of biking for example is not doing 100km on the road, but doing 30km on high hills or mountains is much more painfull and it will feel like going to the gym after it.
