It is a very messy field of study. The endogeneity is borderline impossible to untangle and data quality is terrible.
I'm blown away, though, that anyone could say shooting someone over an argument isn't a "deep-seated moral failure". Letting yourself be lethally out of control is as deep of a moral failing as anything.
