I am not a big user of Craigslist, and I don't know if anyone is. But that's exactly what I'm curious about. What have you used Craigslist for? Is it past its prime? Are there dangers to avoid? Have you used the cryptocurrency option?

Every post to me feels like a potential side quest adventure. I'm wondering if I should pick up playing bass because of the volume of bassist requests in my area. Just today, I sent out an email response to a particularly intriguing post. We shall see what becomes of it.

I love craigslist. For about a decade I found nearly every apartment I lived in in New York on there. Met so many characters in the process.

Bought and sold a bunch of music equipment. When I left New York I pretty sold everything I owned on craigslist.

Dangers to avoid - every now and then a kinda weird person would turn up to my apartment to look at something I was selling. I always invited people in to look at whatever they are buying. I never had any issues, but I can imagine someone has at some point. So maybe best to have someone else around if you are worried about that. Maybe its best to bring shit to your front door instead of bringing them inside, I dunno.

I have a fond memory of buying a telecaster guitar off a teenager in Queens. Here I am not long arrived from Ireland to the big apple and this young asian kid is shredding on his guitar in his bedroom and I'm standing there beside his mother with 400 quid in my hand. Cash is king on craigslist. Never used bitty, but would consider it today.

At one point there was a very active section on CL called "missed connections" where folks would recount moments shared with subway crushes. It was one of the weirdest and best places on the internet to browse. We need more of that quirky fun stuff.

ah that's cool, that's exactly the kind of story I hoped I would hear

Every now and then? You are being kind

I've used Craigslist to buy and sell plants and furniture. I've rented apartments and found roommates on it. A long while ago I worked at a salvage yard and sold a ton of stuff on it.

Also the free section on Craigslist is pretty awesome.

reply

I've sold a few things, but not much.

reply

I haven't used it in a long time, but in college we found lots of yard sales through craigslist, as well some of our home rentals.

My wife and I also got our dog on Craigslist.

Remember the recycler?

reply

I don't. What was that?

reply

maybe it was local to southern Cal

Oh man, I've used it a lot. Sold and bought a lot of cameras and guitar stuff. You just gotta be smart about using it (as in all things, really).

I stayed in my first airbnb via craigslist in 2012. I've sold a variety of stuff locally and bought a lot of furniture through craigslist.

I found/got my office couch via craigslist!

reply

it's a swell couch, gathering dust I'm afraid :(

reply

At least this wasn’t your first Airbnb lol

I think it is interesting to see car ads on there. Each person has a unique way of giving information on their car.

reply

haha true. I have a car ad up at the moment

reply

You should link it lol

reply

I’ve used it to get rid of some junk for free. And I think I sold an item or two but I was fairly sketched out by the process so haven’t done it in years

reply

I sold some stuff on Craigslist years ago. I also hired labourers from Craigslist for different projects in the early years of my business.

reply

I use offerup or facebook marketplace to sell stuff. Craigslist is kind of sketchy tbh because you can't verify necessarily (unless that has changed in recent time).

reply

Craigslist does seem to be past its prime. I used it all the time, more than a decade ago. Now there's a lot of junk there.

In this area, all the buying/selling is done on Facebook Marketplace, unfortunately, so that's what I use. Where I previously lived, it was some Facebook Marketplace, but more Nextdoor marketplace.

It seems like a really long time since Craigslist has been very active.

reply

I have gotten gigs, sold and bought items. and rented homes

Really enjoyed the personals before it went away

use it about 2 times per month.

Lately? Nothing

reply

I know landlords who use it for tenant vacancies

reply

I know of it but it would be like gumtree here. I and many others use facebook marketplace for the same sort of things here where I don’t think many use gumtree or the likes so much
