The RV FLIP research vessel is unique in the world for its ability to change from horizontal to vertical position in the middle of the ocean. Measuring 108 meters long and weighing 700 tons, this ship was designed to tilt at 90 degrees, leaving its bow 17 meters above the water (equivalent to a five-story building) while 91 meters remain submerged, ensuring stability against waves. This configuration change, which takes around 28 minutes, is achieved by filling huge tanks at the stern with seawater.
