The last known specimen of the Tasmanian Tiger died at Hobart Zoo, Tasmania, in 1936, marking the animal's extinction. During the early 20th century, Tasmanian Tigers were widely captured and taken to zoos, where they became symbols of extinction due to overhunting, habitat destruction, and disease.
There are some representations in Aboriginal art that may depict the Tasmanian Tiger. Drawings on rocks, known as Aboriginal rock art, show figures that some scholars interpret as representations of this carnivorous marsupial. These depictions, dated to around 4,000 to 6,000 years ago, indicate that Aboriginal Australians may have recorded the presence of the Tasmanian Tiger.
