The first mistake was assuming that because a group of men from elitist institutions decided that Europe was gonna be a single thing, therefore it made it so.

Yes but the vast majority of Europe wants to be aligned to the west.
Only a few rogue states ruled by autocratic tyrants align with Russia and even there most citizens do not want to be aligned with Russia.
