The Trump administration is reportedly preparing an executive order aiming to “abolish” the Department of Education—a prominent demand of far-right activists in recent years. His pick for Secretary of Education—Linda McMahon—is hostile to public schools and supports the privatization of public education.
The U.S. public education system needs all sorts of reforms to boost its capacity to provide an excellent education to all children. But public education is also why the United States became the richest country the world has ever seen, and its future depends on maintaining and strengthening this system—not tearing it down.
looks as if the more money is thrown at poverty, the more poverty grows. public education is good at training public servants to the system. private education teaches people to choose for themselves whom to serve!
i once saw a fundraiser for scholarships for local farmers' kids - most of those kids go on to pursue administration, economics, something irrelevant to farming, and only a few go into, say, veterinary medicine or mechanical engineering. the lady hosting the stage had colored hair, and this was in the middle of a farming community - she was definitely not part of the farming club, or part of it in-name-only.
essentially, the destruction of local businesses starts with capturing the kid's minds.
