Aircraft manufacturer Boeing has awarded the joint venture of BE&K Building Group and HITT Contracting a contract for the $1 billion expansion of the company's North Charleston, South Carolina
, campuses, HITT announced."HITT is proud to partner with BE&K and Boeing on this transformative expansion in Charleston," said HITT Co-President Evan Antonides. "This investment reinforces Boeing's commitment to growth in South Carolina, and we're honored to help bring their vision to life.
"Our Charleston team looks forward to delivering a project that will drive economic impact and job creation in the region," Antonides said.
BE&K, based in Morrisville, North Carolina, is a national design-build and construction management firm that specializes in aviation and aerospace construction projects, HITT said. General contractor HITT, which is headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, operates offices in 14 markets around the United States.
The joint venture will serve as construction manager for the project, HITT said, with Melbourne, Florida-based architecture and design firm BRPH as the architect of record.
"We are honored that Boeing has once again entrusted BE&K to continue supporting their vision and goals through this significant expansion at their North Charleston campus," said Frank Holley, CEO of BE&K.
"We look forward to a successful collaboration with HITT and Boeing and the positive impacts this project will bring to the surrounding community and Boeing's customers around the world," Holley said.
Boeing has operated in South Carolina since 2009 and employs more than 7,800 people at three campuses there – two in the Charleston area and one in Orangeburg, according to the state's Department of Commerce (SC Commerce).
The company, according to
the department, handles the full production cycle for the 787 Dreamliner airplane at its South Carolina facilities, as well as fabrication, assembly and delivery of the 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10 to customers around the world.
The expansion will take place at the two Charleston County facilities, SC Commerce said, not in Orangeburg.
Construction on the expansion project, which will allow Boeing to meet its production targets for
the 787 Dreamliner and other potential rate increases, is set to begin later this year and wrap up in 2027
My Thoughts 💭
I didn’t know Boeing had a plant in SC. But despite all of their recent issues they are expanding operations. Good to see.
