I wasn’t able to finish reading this book before I had to return it to the library. But I took down some invaluable insights. Maybe this will be useful to you.
  • ability to just do things without worrying too much about the risks
  • rejection sensitive dysphoria
  • Try to snap themselves out of the intensity by forcing their brain to think about something else. Biting down on frozen ice / lemon sweets would snap their minds out of the emotional intensity and into the ‘here and now’.
  • What makes them sensitive to rejection is the same thing that enables them to connect with people in special ways
  • Make ‘give me a minute, please’ your default response. When you remove yourself from the situation, you’re putting space between the stimulus and your reaction. This gives your brain time to regulate itself and to not be influenced by the intense feelings.
  • ADHD people feel this urgency to act straight away because they are subconsciously worried about forgetting the thought. They can bypass this urgency by writing the thought down.
  • Whenever people ask them to do something, they can stop themselves from responding immediately by saying “let me think about it”.
  • “thanks so much for asking. Let me check my diary and get back to you in 24 hours.”
  • Get an accountability buddy
  • Body-double your way to the finish line. Have someone watch you do a dreaded task.
  • Gamify tasks.
  • People may unknowingly self-medicate their ADHD through alcohol. If they struggle to fall asleep at night, they might start drinking heavily in an effort to medicate their insomnia.
  • People with ADHF have a deficit in their prefrontal cortex. So they are predisposed to becoming addicted to substances that give you dopamine (like alcohol). Their emotional epicentre of the brain (aka limbic system) is unregulated, and they are more susceptible to pleasure-seeking activities. They are extremely impulsive.
  • Information dumping is when we share a lot of information about our special interest.
  • Body doubling is the act of performing a task with somebody else. Being alone in company.
  • Having ADHD means we’re really good at thinking about starting things but really bad at actually starting things.
  • We can lose ourselves in a hyper-focus for hours and forget to eat or drink.
Nothing about ADHD being fake? (or at least ~90% something of self-professed spectrums peeps)
reply
Something about everything with humans is fake. In our case, my son didn't breathe for nearly a half hour at birth (neonatal encephalopathy or brain damage). As a result, ADHD and other issues.
