Not to sound rude or be offensive, but are “illegal aliens” paying taxes? I guess I assumed that anyone in the US illegally would be operating under the radar in as many ways as possible, taxes being one of them.

Sure, but in many situations one can be legal for years, say on work visa, then laid off and only have one month to find a new job.
