Given how the absolute shellacking the Yankees busted out today it will be interesting to see how the Commish Office responds. It does seem to pass through the rules and credit to the Yankees analytics staff but I could see if this keeps happening owners push Manfred to put a stop to this until “additional testing” or some crap is done.
Here are what Jazz and Volpes bats look like
It’s not the bats they were using. Nestor Cortes is the most overrated pitcher in baseball.

Agreed!!! I loved the Stros facing him!
Honestly I think what the Yankees have done is legal within the rule book because it’s still circular but I’m not sure it goes with the logic of the rules. I would imagine that a ball of the end of the bat SUCKS with these new bats as well

It’s interesting to see how it will play out because one would think pitchers will just pitch them outside to avoid the sweet spot.

Yeah that would make the most sense! It is wild the Yankees have a MIT Physicist on payroll and this is what he came up with

How is this different from George Brett using pine tar ?
reply
The idea is that you are moving the mass of the wood to help better barrel the ball. Pine tar was just stickiness it doesnt give you an advantage. More mass by altering the shape of a bat for improved performance is different
I’m surprised it took this long for something like this to happen.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed talking about this on the pod: #929419

Its an interesting thing with math/science behind it! I do wonder though what the long term impacts will be swinging something that isnt balanced

Well, the other dynamic is that pitchers will adjust, which will change each hitter's optimal bat shape. I'm not sure if the analytics will be able to keep up with that.
My proposal is that batters will end up needing caddies to bring them a whole selection of bats to choose from. Otherwise, pitchers will know where to place their pitches.
