This would mean that airport security would go back to being privately run instead of by the TSA which was created by President G.W. Bush after the attacks on 9/11.

This is more than 20 years overdue.
They fail every security assessment they're put through and they've made travel so much worse.

I wasn't where I am today in my evolution on political thought... and yet back then I knew the TSA was a mistake. I say mistake, it wasn't a mistake because politicians HAVE TO DO SOMETHING! This is the most charitable view of politicians. When there's a disaster or something goes wrong sometimes the best option is to do almost nothing. Politicians just can't seem to do that.
The dudes that hijacked those planes too box cutters on the planes which was allowed... it was not a failure of the airport security but rather their understanding of the threats they face. At the time I remember saying to people, this will never happen again. Not in this way because now people know. I mean, we know that because of the response of passengers the last plane when they found out what was going on.
The TSA is terrible on all levels. Always has been. This cannot happen soon enough...

The "Do something" could have just been more secure cockpits and sky marshals on some flights. This was insane and intensely unpopular right from the start...but then people just got used to it.

Very true. I've despised the TSA from day one. Not saying I despise the people, some of them are fine and I do have sympathy for some of them. Others are terrible. I still opt out of the body scanners. Yeah, I'm one of those guys.

I've largely just opted out of flying.

I have as well, but sometimes its the only viable option. Flying sucks these days compared to pre-9/11.
The Teleban won.

I find this to be a big nothing burger. Is the TSA really that bad? Like if you hate it dont fly and you never have to deal with them. If security goes back to the airlines tickets will get more expensive and the same nonsense is going to take place just to get to your gate.
Getting rid of TSA is just a right leaning political farce that somehow limits freedom when flying.

Wow dude. Wow. "Don't fly". They have a monopoly unless you can afford to fly on a private jet you are forced to use their services.
The main reason to get rid of the TSA is because they suck at doing their job and like most services it can be provided at lower cost and with better results privately. That's my opinion at least. But, there has been reporting on their lack luster performance.
I'm not sure if tickets prices will go up or not actually. It might happen, I'm not sure if the TSA charges the airports for the service. If they didn't they should have. But if they didn't the tax payers paid for it, even ones that did not use the service.

Flying is a privilege. 95% of the people on the planet will never fly.
I am one who doesn’t think the TSA does a terrible job. I check in and out with no issues. One time a friend lost their ID they let them fly home by answering a few questions.
For some odd reason the right thinks deregulation is king and the free market will do things at a lower cost and better than the government. In some sectors sure but not in all. The profit motive falls apart in certain sectors of the economy and then you get corruption/collusion and other plots and schemes that were created by the free market just to increase profits.

I understand where you are coming from with that. My experience with TSA is very different as it is with others. Glad you have had good luck.

I'm curious now. What government agency do you think it would be a good idea to get rid of?

If this were to go to private hands flying costs would skyrocket because the government would be able to absolutely crush them in reviews. Right now when TSA fails changes are made but there isn’t a monetary penalty. There would be if it were private.
Do I love TSA?! No but given I work at a clear target for attacks they have a clear track record at being better than what was before them. Airline hijackings were not out of the blue as they are now.
If you think private industry would thrive in TSA place just look at where TSA isn’t… private airlines and those prices…. Not cheap

I strongly disagree. Private airlines are a different market. Its not catering to the mass market.
I do not think TSA has a better record of security either. Agree to disagree on this one.
reply
Fair enough it’s just the Federal government won’t fine itself but they will fine private company
reply
That's ridiculous, of course yes. Airports should be private property and have private security that don't treat everyone as a criminal before committing crimes

They have no valid measures of success
