I think it was more of a weekend side hustle. The story I heard involved him forgetting about a trunkfull of cheese on a very hot weekend.
Wow, I guess he could have sold it as Very Aged out of state cheese! :)
There were things to smuggle do self-organized free trade from surrounding states to my state, too. One of them was something called Everclear which was, or perhaps is, 100% potable grain alcohol. It was prohibited in my state, so the sale price was about 4 times the buying price in another state. Only done on the weekends and when there was a need for extra cash.
