Key points
-
New amenities and services are coming to Terminal 3 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
-
Airlines that use Terminal 3 include Delta, United, Alaska and Frontier.
*The $326 million project is expected to be finished in 2027.
The oldest terminal at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport will soon get a little bigger.
Work is beginning on a new concourse in the north side of Terminal 3, adding more flight capacity and space for new restaurants, shops and a lounge.
McCarthy Building Companies Inc. said it
recently began construction of the $326 million, 173,000-square-foot concourse. Airport staff said they anticipate the concourse will be finished in 2027.
“Every portion of the new Terminal 3 concourse will provide an exceptional experience for Sky Harbor passengers," Thomas Assante, McCarthy's vice president of operations, said in a statement. McCarthy was also involved in Mesa Gateway Airport's five-gate concourse that opened in February 2024.
Here's what we know about Sky Harbor's new Terminal 3 concourse.
Phoenix Sky Harbor Terminal 3 concourse will add 6 gates
The new Terminal 3 concourse includes six gates for flights, which will increase the
terminal's capacity to 26 gates.
Plans also include a new lounge, three food and beverage spaces and two retail spaces,
airport spokesman Greg Roybal said.[…]
Can you walk from Terminal 3 to 4 at Sky Harbor?
No. But along with the work on the new concourse, Sky Harbor plans to build a new post-security pedestrian bridge that will connect Terminals 3 and 4 for the first time.
When it opens, people can walk between the two terminals without needing to go through security a second time.
More improvements coming to Phoenix airport
Terminal 3's six-gate concourse is not the only improvement coming soon to Sky Harbor. Other projects in the works include:
-
Taxiway U, a 2,100-foot-long taxiway connecting the north and south airfields from the west side of the terminals.
The project received millions in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed under former president Joe Biden. Like the Terminal 3 concourse, airport staff also expect it to be ready in 2027.
-
Upgrades to Terminal 4's Central Utility Plant, improving air conditioning throughout the terminal. Sky Harbor received $71 million in federal funding for the work.
-
A new terminal on the airport's west side, not expected to open until at least the late 2030s as the process required to plan and develop it
− including a six-year environmental review − takes years.
My Thoughts 💭
The growth in Phoenix over these last two decades has been crazy. No surprise the airport is getting much needed upgrades and expansion. Having flown in and out of PHX a lot the airport wasn’t in bad shape overall but these new upgrades will definitely be appreciated for sure.
