You might have read about how I was pissed off with my students. So, I made them stand in a straight line at the hall and blasted them, group by group.
I guess it was this heartfelt outpouring of emotions that made me feel closer to them (and vice versa). Today, I made them stay back at the hall again, but it was not to scold them. I wanted to apply the memory palace technique.
Basically, I designated five places at the school hall. I assigned each location to a particular aspect of informal email writing. So, five locations = five aspects of an informal email. As you can see, I made five students hold a piece of paper each. Collectively, the five words/phrases are:
- How are you?
- Details - date, time, venue
- Disappointed
- Suggest
- See you soon!
These words may not make much sense to you, but it’s okay. As long as my students remember them. Which they did. They are used to me using the memory palace to convey information to them.
Subsequently, during our English lesson, I focused on aspects 1 and 2. I then designed an online lesson on our beloved Student Learning Space and asked them to attempt it at home.
Boy, did the responses come in more promptly as a result of my shelling. I was able to identify their misconceptions and direct them in the right path.
It was a good day. Getting my students to remember the five aspects of a disappointment email. Getting them to apply their understanding on the same day. Young minds working their asses off because I am.
