Jason Whitlock who has now carved out his lane in sports media for conservative/Christians thinks the NBA is broken. He invited Scap Attack who takes a dump on LeBron every second of every day of his life to discuss radical ideas on how to fix the NBA. This is only part one of their I think 2 or maybe 3 part series.
Most of their complaints revolve around the players getting paid to much and the fans should have more of a say.
Drawing from memory, below were the big ideas:
  • Make it a 69 game season
  • Focus on division
  • Scrap the All Star Game
  • Replace with rivalry week (see pic above)
  • Fans get to rank which players did well and those who didn’t. This will effect how much they get paid after rivalry week
  • Give fans control of player compensation (example is take 50% of player revenue and pay it out towards the end of the season based upon performance and fan support)
  • The other 50% will be earned in the offseason (explanation coming today)
  • Make the NBA finals an event by hosting the first two games at a neutral site with bigger seating. Families would make it an event like we do the Super Bowl.
I thought this was crazy talk but then I watched this video today and the NBA changed the rules to stop George Mikan from dominating. Changing the paint width and adding the shot clock.
So maybe drastic changes that Whitlock mentions here could be the shot in the arm to make the regular season matter again. I would also add they should fix the steaming. I don’t watch the Knicks because I’m not paying MSG $39 or $49 a month to watch basketball.
What do you think stackers? Whitlock crazy or do these ideas make sense?
69 games? Nice.

Yeah he breaks it down in hbd video. It works out with the number of teams east and west and following the NFL model somewhat but that was the first thing I chucked at.

Bill Simmons is also big on the 69 game season (after expansion to 32 teams).
The All-Star game sucks, but it shouldn't. There are ways to make it something fans love, but players won't like it. The All-Star rosters should be entirely determined by fans.
The low ratings FUD is demonstrably not an issue for the TV partners, who just signed up to pay much more money per game. I don't understand why they don't care about it, but they clearly don't.
They tried out Rivalry Week this year. No one cared, because there are no rivalries anymore. I'm skeptical that they can just be manufactured.

True as a Knicks fan I hated the pacers haha now it’s more I hate players than actual teams.

I love hearing about random "Fuck Trae Young!" outbursts in NYC. That is the kind of sports rivalry I grew up with, but it's a rarity anymore.

I actually said that this morning and LMAO about him being a crybaby last night. Good riddance!

He still gets one more Play-In game, so you'll get to say it again!

The only thing I really like is the shorter season.

According to my principles, "the player should play, and the fan should support". They would have nothing else to do. The fan is practically going to have fun when he watches a game (unless he is a fanatic, a die-hard fan who follows the team everywhere and takes every defeat / victory to heart), and the player is "just" an employee (of the team) who, upon fulfilling certain conditions (playing, statements, appearances, interviews, etc.), receives a salary from his employer. It's that simple, I think... I agree that the salaries are high...but not every village is born with 4-5 NBA players...those who envy them, do the same after them...

Yeah but the product is losing ground to the competition (NFL) and the labor (the players) care more about themselves than the overall league.

This is also true..in the past, sport was really SPORT, and players played as a hobby. Today, sport is a hard-hitting BUSINESS. I remember reading in many places that in 1954, when Hungary played in the final of the World Cup in Bern, Swiss watches were smuggled back to Hungary sewn into the balls to earn a little extra money with them... Today, this is unthinkable, because the players are piled high with money...
