There are hundreds of Nitter instances operating. Twitter would need to kill the API functions that Nitter uses to "shut them down".

That is exactly my point. Those hundreds of Nitter servers are utterly pointless when Twitter can just say “hey this app is stealing from us, turn that off.”

Yeah a lot of apps use Twitter official APIs with terms and rate limits etc.
Nitter uses unofficial APIs. That means that they don’t have permission to republish the data. It would be more respectable to just start using Nostr instead
