I'm thinking of Sowell's constrained vs unconstrained visions. As reality asserts itself, on many fronts, the unconstrained (progressive) perspective is losing adherents.

As people realize that we aren't gods, and can't just manifest whatever feelgoodery we want, they become more conservative.
