What a construction project. The aptly-named “Extremely Large Telescope” is currently being built on top of a mountain in the middle of Chile’s remote Atacama Desert, more than 150–kilometres away from the nearest city.
Construction teams have broken the build down into prefabricated components and are delivering them to the mountain’s base camp via specially constructed access roads. From there, remote controlled transporters carry each segment up to the mountain summit for assembly.
Once complete the optical telescope will allow us to see deeper into space than ever before, potentially revealing other life forms within our galaxy
