Modern roller coasters use loops shaped like teardrops, known as clothoid loops, rather than perfect circles. This design helps smooth out the shift in G-forces as riders transition from horizontal to vertical, making the experience safer and more comfortable. Early looping coasters in New York City caused riders to experience extreme and sometimes dangerous G-forces. The adoption of the oval-shaped loop in the 1970s made looping coasters more popular and enjoyable.
