Modern birds are descendants of dinosaurs, yet none have reached the enormous size of their prehistoric relatives. While some extinct birds, like the “terror birds” of South America, grew up to ten feet tall, the high energy demands of flight make it difficult for birds to grow any larger. Scientists suggest that limited evolutionary pressure and the predatory nature of bird behavior help keep bird sizes relatively small.
