Lest you think that I’m so narcissistic to collate pictures of myself being the emcee during Awards Day, my Vice-principal was the one to do that and send it to me. Apparently, he had thought that I would play the ukulele to entertain the crowd.
After becoming a primary school teacher, I have incorporated props into my presentations. I fondly remember the day I borrowed a frying pan from the canteen vendor to illustrate the process of heat transfer to a P4 class, much to the bemusement of students and colleagues alike. Anyway, so I think using props is just good teaching. I won’t consider it my signature style.
The reason why I ponder so much about signature style is that the ex-Director General of Education, Mrs Chua Yen Ching, always owns the stage with her attention-grabbing magic tricks. She stands out from other presenters because the way she delivers a punchline by unravelling a trick is so quintessentially her. In a nutshell, I want to be memorable like her, but I don’t want to put in the hard work of learning magic tricks haha.
These two years, my signature style evolved quite organically. On Mid-autumn Day, I sang 十五的月亮 to the school before going through sleep-inducing instructions for the Normal(Technical) exam. For a presentation on autism, I sang the chorus of Colours of the Wind to drum in how we ought to learn from people with a different point of view. Most recently, I sang a Kumamoto folk song when I shared about One Piece and its connection with Kumamoto.
Now to make my name like Mrs Chua.
What’s your signature style?
