I tried this a few months ago, but I couldn’t find a way to make it profitable, always ended up spending more sats than I earned.

Youd need to go pplns and get lucky with a block or two over expected mining rewards during the duration. I suggest either sbi crypto or Ocean pools. Otherwise instant mining is really just to try out the service before you make a larger buy.
I have done several long term mining contracts using pplns pools and so far have not lost out due to variance. Its a great way to participate in mining and wash some utxos you might want to disrupt the papertrail with.
