We used to live in a small town in the middle of the farm country. I used to buy fresh eggs from a co-worker that had about three dozen chickens that she just let run around her yard. They had the most beautiful orange colored yokes and tasted great.
After leaving that job, I had to travel to the city to work. I found a place that sold eggs the same way your farmer did, on the honor system with no one around (in Japan, mujin hambai). He had more chickens and more eggs, but I bough about five dozen every Friday and the family really enjoyed them.
We also found a local farmer that would sell us raw milk straight from his bulk tank. Since he lived only a few minutes away, i went a couple times a week and bought four gallons at a time. Great milk when you can get it!
Unfortunately, we now live in the city and there are no local farmers that we have found. So now the eggs and milk are not as tasty and easy to get. In the US, Obiden and his crew were on a campaign to kill as many laying chickens as possible so we had an egg shortage and very high egg prices.
