The Treasury Department announced Thursday that the U.S. Mint phase out the coin after 230 years.

According to the Mint's annual report, it costs almost four cents to produce the coin, which dates back to the 1790s. By phasing out the penny's production, the Treasury expects to save an immediate $56 million annually.
