Mary Anderson, an American, invented the first windshield wiper and patented it in 1903. The idea came to her while she was watching drivers in New York manually cleaning their windows while driving. She created a device with a rubber blade activated by an internal lever, making the task safer and more practical. Despite its usefulness, her invention was initially ignored. Even so, her design influenced models used worldwide.
