The ESPN Power Index is an analytics tool used to project the rankings of each NFL based on facing an average opponent on a neutral site. It doesn't factor in strength of schedule at all and varies differently with actual win total projections (For instance: Power index has 49ers 11th but projected wins as 6th).
Here are the current Power Index Rankings:
- Eagles
- Chiefs
- Ravens
- Lions
- Bills
- Commanders
- Bengals
- Packers
- Chargers
- Rams
- 49ers
- Broncos
- Texans
- Bucs
- Vikings
- Bears
- Steelers
- Cowboys
- Dolphins
- Cardinals
- Seahawks
- Jaguars
- Colts
- Raiders
- Patriots
- Falcons
- Giants
- Panthers
- Jets
- Browns
- Titans
- Saints
My takeaways:
- I don't mind the top 5 but I wouldn't necessarily have it in that order.
- Bengals, Chargers are too high and Packers are slightly too high but I would have them fringe top 10. I like the Rams, 49ers, Texans, Bucs and the Broncos better than the Chargers and I think we can have a debate about the Bengals and Packers and most of those teams. I don't know what to make of the Bengals. If the new DC can fix the D they should be pretty good but they could also lose a bunch of games 38-35 like last year.
- Cowboys are too low with Dak back healthy
- Cardinals are too low. I think they are much improved and will be a playoff contender
- Falcons are too low. They might win their division.
- Raiders are too low. Much improved. Tough division though.
