Lately I have forced myself out of my libertarian bubble to see what the "liberal" podcasters are talking about. I am mainly interested in Gaza coverage, but I watched this video this morning:
One of the talking points was Ben Shapiro's warning that Trump's "crypto" schemes and rugpulls would turn both democrats and some Maga supporters against.... wait for it..... crypto.
The conflation of the word bitcoin and crypto is more than simply irritating in this context. Despite our best efforts, the average Joe still doesn't recognize the difference. I expect the "bitcoin is a scam" FUD to be in full force in two years.
I know bitcoin will survive this. I also know that its acceptance by Wall Street will be even deeper by then.
Still, bitcoin was created as a result of bank bailouts and reactions like Occupy Wall Street. The perception that bitcoin is a tool used by the elites to screw the little guy seems inevitable in the coming years. Trump will be portrayed during the mid terms as the rich guy rug pulling his ignorant supporters to grow richer. That argument will be valid. The distinction between bitcoin and shitcoins will be fuzzy.
If Satoshi is still out there, I hope he's pissed.
People that don't understand the game theory will fall behind, unavoidable natural selection.
Capital is moving from the slow to the fast.
There was no outrage at the deep state pumping their real estate, NGO contracts, and stonk bags with Cantillon impunity for decades. The perl clutchers are without standing.
If Satoshi is still out there, I hope he's pissed

Damn! You're probably right.

Yeah, there are so many psyops. Who knows how deep and wide it goes.

I think you messed up the video link by unknowingly putting _

No. That's the link. The Musk segment was what they chose to publicize.

I mean the video isn't visible in the post. Did you do it intentionally?

Oh! Thanks. I just fixed it.

I am having some trouble zapping you? Some are getting through. Some are failing
Absolutely nailed it. This is the consequence of years of conflating Bitcoin with the casino of shitcoins. And now, when politicians jump on the grift train, the average person lumps it all together: “crypto = scam.”
But let’s be crystal clear — Bitcoin is not crypto. Bitcoin didn’t get created to enrich influencers, celebrities, or politicians. It was born from the ashes of financial collapse, as a direct answer to corruption, bailouts, and manipulation by both governments and elites.
The sad part? The same forces Bitcoin was designed to fight are now trying to hijack the narrative — turning it into a circus of meme coins, NFTs, and empty promises. But Bitcoin doesn’t care. It keeps producing blocks, no matter who rug-pulls who.
The real fight is education. The next cycle isn’t about price — it’s about separating signal from noise, Bitcoin from scams, sovereignty from exploitation. Stay sharp.

I've come around to thinking shitcoins will always be with us. They will change and the scams with evolve but humans are greedy and slow to learn on mass. But some of us learn and avoid it. Others are ahead of us and scam the masses. It is what it is. I'm not gonna cheer lead scammers though.
reply
Its not good for bitcoin. Its hard to measure the impact though. Political shitcoining seems to be the new shitcoining this cycle. It does seem like it's more of a way to fund Trump and his machine though. A new grift for sure.

What I hate most about the crypto complex is it stole the prime early years for the little guy to get into Bitcoin before the leeches arrived. Definitely some did get in but so many were put off by crypto scams or were convinced they were too late to bitcoin and could get rich with coin xyz.

Greed vs integrity. There is a mix of it in all of us.

I don’t think people will be affected in any way with Trump’s meme shitcoin! I don’t think there are that many people interested in meme coins that are doing anything with them that are expecting to profit, unless they were in on it from the beginning. And, they might even be the ones that show the losses, too. Is a meme coin (shitcoin) any different than a book deal or a bunch of high priced speaking engagements? I don’t really think so, how about you?

Yesterday while talking with some friends at a bar, I mentioned the topic of Bitcoin, and the whole table asked me, 'But that’s a scam, right?' There’s still a lot of work to do, but a lot.
reply
Yeah, you hit on some good points. That link between Bitcoin and crypto is super hard for the average person to break down. A lot of people just use Bitcoin's hype to push their own scams. We gotta keep educating as many folks as possible, it's a constant grind. Bitcoin ain't crypto!

Shitcoins have always been a drag on bitcoin. In the long run though bitcoin will outlast both shitcoins and the sleazy narratives that come along with them. The real benefits that bitcoin provides humanity are here to stay and will only become more apparent to everyone over time.

To take a contrary viewpoint , perhaps Trump understands that 'crypto' in particular stable coins, Bitcoin and maybe even some shitcoin, may needed to compete with Chinas CIPS and mBridge. The Bitcoin community in its turn is in denial about the competition for who denominates international trade payments, while China has turned N.Korea, Iran, Russia to using its protocols and its currency and the Saudis, foundational partners in petrodollar have joined both BRICS and mBridge. Mention mBridge to Bitcoiners and Libertarians and you get a wall of UD exceptionalist denial, but it is the USDs domination over trade payments via an antiquated SWIFT that is the basis of USD hegemony and the exorbitant privilege USD reserve currency confers. Trump made early the threat to sanction any BRICS member who dares not use the dollar- (looking at you Saudi Arabia). Trump knows better than most shitcoiners and Bitcoiners the vulnerability of the US to a challenge to its global banking/trade payments hegemony- and stable coins and Bitcoin , do provide possible alternatives to mBridge, Chinas digital trade payments protocol. The USD Fed Res and USD face fundamental structural and political problems in adopting any sort of CBDC due to the structure and power of the FED compared to the US government- (China does not have that problem- look at what happened to Jack Ma) ) whereas stablecoins, Bitcoin, or even some shitcoin might potentially enable an alternative that can compete on speed, efficiency, credibility and price. Alongside the privacy concerns, CBDCs greatly increase the ability of Central Banks/governments, to direct capital allocation flows- this is not so much of a problem for autocracies like UAE, Saudis, China and Thailand, but for the private banks who own the US Fed Res it would be almost insurmountable to surrender their control of the dollars issuance and allocation to the US government.

Okay, so could you elaborate: how does trump coin fix this, exactly? Do comment on the fact that it was 100% premined, 90% distributed to insiders and how that helps the US fight the CCP.
reply
I cannot as it does not. Trumps shitcoin is simply a demonstration of the distraction, diversion, cronyism and graft that Trump performs so consistently alongside confronting some issues the establishment politics of the US have avoided. Trumps shitconnery antics though do not refute the points and issues I am raising above... they do clearly though, serve to distract from them.

There will definitely be a few new sets of derangement syndromes (BDS & CDS).
As long as there's still a passionate and well educated Bitcoin user base fighting back against the fud we will win.
reply
How do you fight the fud when every time Trump opens his mouth he’s on every national news channel? He’ll say something and it reaches millions of people immediately. Passionate Bitcoiners don’t have that kind of exposure.

I meant that the mainstream media will spin their own BS and it's up to us to continue to debunk it.
Conflating Trump with Bitcoin is a problem, so they need to understand that he has nothing to do with Bitcoin.
reply
I think we just have to keep pushing back that bitcoin is not proof of stake and it's literally for everyone, friends and enemies, and that a mid-90s Albania scenario is not possible in the context of a denominator that cannot be debased.
Aside from that you will never win over entrenched opinions where people have staked their reputation in opposition to Bitcoin and so will invent a whole host of nonsense reasons from their desired conclusions. Bitcoin simply doesn't care.
Stay humble and stack sats.
