Ten reasons why I enjoy teaching at NorthLight #4
  1. NorthLight is a vocational school, which means that I work intimately with tradespeople. That lends itself to opportunities for me to receive specialised help.
My Co-FT has been the unwilling recipient of my “exploitation”. Being well versed in facility services, he has come to my house not once, but twice. Once to open the storeroom door that the wifey unwittingly locked. Another time to fix a leaking pipe. The best part of it all? Engaging his help means that I get a free ride home because we leave from school together.
Even a chance encounter can yield useful knowledge necessary for me to undertake the next step. Prior to renovating my flat, I had a random chat with another facility services colleague and brought up my intention to have two additional air-conditioners installed. He answered that that could only be done if the technician could manage to find a way to install a new compressor - and not every HDB flat allows for that kind of arrangement. Armed with this insight, I was thus emboldened to ask my air-con the right questions and act as if I was in the know. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to fake it till I made it.
I will miss receiving help from colleagues from different walks of life.
