TL:DR
The first phase of the Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension Improvements Program, which is from Exit 14 to 14A and connects Newark and Bayonne along Route 78, will replace the current four-lane span over Newark Bay with twin cable-stayed bridges.
NEWARK -
The controversial $6 billion Newark Bay Bridge replacement has received a permit and “finding of no significant impact” from the U.S. Coast Guard, clearing the way for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority to proceed with the construction of an extension between Interchanges 14 in Newark and 14A in Bayonne and Jersey City.
The Turnpike Authority announced Wednesday morning that it received the go-ahead to begin construction next year; it will continue for 10 years.
The authority must now obtain permits from the Army Corps of Engineers for construction work within the waters of Newark Bay.The first phase of the project, which is from Exit 14 to 14A and connects Newark and Bayonne along Route 78, will replace the current four-lane span over Newark Bay with twin cable-stayed bridges.
The existing Newark Bay Bridge will remain in service until 2031 while one of the new cable-stayed bridges is built alongside it to the north. When that span is complete, all traffic will be shifted onto the new bridge and the existing bridge will be demolished.
When the second cable-stayed bridge is completed in 2036, traffic will shift into its permanent configuration with four eastbound lanes on one bridge and four westbound lanes on the other. This approach to the bridge replacement project will take longer and cost more, said Lisa Navarro, supervising engineer at the Turnpike Authority, but it minimizes impacts on the environment and surrounding communities.
The Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike runs for 8.1 miles between the main line of the Turnpike at Interchange 14 in Newark and Jersey Avenue in Jersey City.
My Thoughts 💭
58k Bitcoin 10+ years of construction to replace this bridge. Massive project and the bridge looks beautiful. Kudos to all the people who will make the project happen to allow safe transportation over a body of water.
