Telegram: russian owned, requires phone number, rolls their own unproven cryptography
Discord: privacy nightmare
Signal: requires phone number, promotes their own shitcoin
Matrix: not the best UX, federation is not decentralized enough, most people won't run their own homeserver and will just use the default one.
Threema: paid
Keet: missing a mobile app
Sphinx: will building on LN scale?
Session: ?
Briar: ?

Lol what! Telegram is Russian?

That was poorly worded but the owner is russian and as such can easily be coerced by the russian state to give every up.
The most important criticisms are the in-house custom cryptography and the non-e2e encrypted chats by default.

It’s only a matter of time before this happens to telegram and signal
Simplex chat seem to have a workable alternative
Would be great if it was Sphinx chat though

How can it happen to Signal and Telegram? They are encrypted right?
reply

You can use signal encrypted or not. Also, they have permissions to access your contacts and ask for a phone number.
Telegram is also usually used unencrypted, but has a secret chat option.

You cannot use Signal in non-encrypted mode (unless I'm missing something). Telegram is by default not encrypted, so I wouldn't recommend it for anything important.

If you both have signal, its automatically encrypted, but you know how it can just do texts if you have signal and the other person doesnt? Then, its not.

Oh I thought they already removed the ability to do just texts.

That's the cost you pay when you want to use free apps, whatsapp should just have a paid version that scrubs all your data or keeps it locally on your device so you can keep communicating with your normie friends but still have better privacy instead of forcing a normie to use another app which they're not going to do
Anwyay you shouldn't be chatting anything sensitive in the first place

Interesting idea but I have my concerns about ddosing the LN with memes, gifs and other non-payment data.
I would hate the feeling of waiting 5 minutes for a LN transaction to clear just because people are rick rollling each other.

Why would you see Telegram as being any different than Whatsapp as far as being vulnerable to a similar leak?
Telegram requires a phone number too.
