Poor male mosquitoes, losing their partners right after mating 😄
Scientists have developed a groundbreaking method to fight malaria by engineering a fungus that acts like an STD for mosquitoes. This fungus, harmless to humans, is carried by male mosquitoes and transmitted to females during mating, leading to their death within two weeks. In trials conducted in Burkina Faso, this approach resulted in nearly 90% mortality among female mosquitoes, offering a promising new tool in the fight against malaria, which claimed approximately 597,000 lives in 2024. As mosquitoes develop resistance to traditional treatments, such innovative strategies are crucial in our ongoing battle against this deadly disease.
