Long global semiconductor stocks is now the MOST CROWDED trade among global fund managers, cited by ~73% of respondents in the BofA Global Fund Manager Survey.

This is also the 3rd-highest reading on record since data began in 2014.

Furthermore, fund managers are the most overweight in technology since February 2024, and near the highest overweight since 2020.

By comparison, the previous most crowded trades at similar conviction levels were Long Magnificent 7 in June 2024 at ~70% and Long US tech in October 2020 at ~80%.

When a trade gets this crowded, and an unwind occurs, the selloff can be swift and painful.

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY INSANE

Japan's top FX diplomat Mimura issued his clearest warning yet to speculators on Thursday: "This is my final warning before action."

Finance Minister Katayama added that the time for "bold steps is now nearing," language that typically signals imminent currency intervention.

This comes as the yen weakened beyond 160.7 per US Dollar earlier on Thursday, approaching levels that triggered multiple rounds of intervention in 2024, before firming to 159.3 following the warning.

Japan has intervened in currency markets 6 times since 2022, spending ~$100 billion in 2024 alone to prop up the yen, with individual interventions ranging from ¥729.6 billion to ¥5.92 trillion.

Earlier this week, both the Bank of Japan and the Fed held interest rates steady this week, keeping the wide rate differential between the 2 countries intact and continuing to pressure the yen.

Japan's top currency official issued what he called a "final advisory" to speculators, while Finance Minister Katayama warned that the time for "bold steps" is now nearing — language that typically signals imminent intervention.

Higher oil prices driven by the Iran war are adding further pressure, as Japan's heavy reliance on Middle Eastern oil raises the risk of a deteriorating trade balance.

With the BoJ signaling it needs more time before hiking rates, intervention may be the only near-term tool available to halt the yen's decline.

The yen continues to weaken, and Japan is running out of words.

Japan is on the verge of INTERVENING in currency markets again

The 30-year US Treasury yield surged to 5.00% for the first time since July before pulling back to 4.98%, a level investors view as a critical "line in the sand".

At 5%, bond yields become attractive enough to pull capital away from equities, while simultaneously raising borrowing costs for mortgages, corporate loans, and government debt.

This level has been breached twice before, in 2023 and 2025, but failed to hold for more than a few trading sessions each time.

On all 4 previous occasions over the last 3 years when the 30-year yield approached or exceeded 5%, the S&P 500 saw a pullback each time.

A sustained break above 5%, or an eclipse of the 2023 peak of 5.17%, would push yields into a trading range not seen in nearly 2 DECADES.

This comes as the Iran war has driven oil prices above $105 per barrel, fueling inflation expectations and reducing the likelihood of rate cuts that markets had fully priced in before the war began.

The world's largest bond market is now impossible to ignore.

The US bond market is flashing a major WARNING signal

Tech saw the largest weekly reduction in hedge fund exposure since July 2024, and the 3rd-largest over the last 5 years. 

Selling was driven by long positions being cut far more aggressively than shorts, at a 1.9 to 1 ratio.

Nearly every subsector was hit, led by Software, Semiconductors, Tech Hardware, and Communications Equipment.

Despite this wave of selling, tech exposure remains elevated at 20.6% of total US gross market value. 

This is higher than 92% of the time over the last year and higher than 98% of the time over the last 5 years.

In other words, positioning is still crowded even after aggressive selling.

Across the broader market, hedge funds have now been net sellers in 9 of the last 10 weeks, driven almost entirely by long sales.

Overall, flows show capital rotating out of high-growth sectors while Energy and Health Care saw modest buying.

There is still significant downside risk if tech selling accelerates from here.

Hedge funds are dumping US tech stocks at a furious pace

Russian crude in floating storage has COLLAPSED to less than 5 million barrels, down over -75% from ~20 million barrels in mid-February, according to Vortexa.

Russian oil in transit has also fallen over -40% since its peak of ~150 million barrels earlier this year.

This comes as traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is still at a standstill, with even blacklisted vessels hesitant to test the US naval blockade.

Furthermore, global oil supply shrank -10% last month, and once-deep discounts on Russian and Iranian crude have now turned into premiums as buyers scramble for alternatives.

As a result, India faces its first widespread diesel price hike in 4 years, while China's private refiners, known as teapots and accounting for ~20% of the country's refining capacity, are navigating both higher prices and shrinking Iranian supply as the US blockade cuts off their main source of discounted crude.

Nevertheless, China holds more than 1 billion barrels in reserves and has greater purchasing power, but even Beijing is feeling the strain as flows dry up.

Asia's oil buffer is running out

The CPI for private transportation surged +4.6% MoM in March, to a new all-time high.

YoY, private transportation costs are also up +4.6%, driven entirely by the March spike in gasoline prices.

Since January 2020, transportation costs have soared +36%, reflecting the cumulative impact of surging costs across every category of vehicle ownership.

Motor vehicle maintenance and repair costs have surged +50% since January 2020, while auto insurance prices are up +56% and motor vehicle parts and equipment are up +27%.

Vehicle ownership costs represent nearly 15% of the total CPI inflation basket, amplifying their impact on the broader inflation picture.

For the average American household, rising transportation costs are one of the most persistent sources of financial pressure.

US private transportation costs are skyrocketing

Carlyle's $7 billion Tactical Private Credit Fund saw redemption requests of 16% of shares in Q1 2026.

This is the 3rd highest percentage in the industry, behind Blue Owl Technology Income at 41% and Blue Owl Credit Income at 22%.

The fund is paying out less than a third of what investors requested, capping withdrawals at 5%, meaning investors who asked to redeem ~$750 million received only ~$240 million.

Carlyle is not alone, as Apollo, Ares, Morgan Stanley, and BlackRock have all imposed similar caps in recent weeks.

In fact, EVERY single private credit BDC and interval fund in the industry saw a massive spike in redemption requests in Q1, with not a single fund was left untouched.

Concerns over AI disruption threatening software borrowers, weakening loan portfolios, and tightening lending standards are driving the rush for the exits.

The $1.8-$2.0 trillion private credit market is under more pressure than at any point in its history.

India is set to receive over 12 MILLION barrels of Venezuelan oil in April, the highest monthly volume since February 2020, according to Kpler data.

This comes as India imports ~90% of its crude, with nearly 40% typically transiting the Strait of Hormuz, now largely shut due to the Iran war.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan crude produces higher proportions of diesel and jet fuel, exactly the products facing the tightest supply globally right now.

India is turning to Venezuela to replace lost Middle Eastern crude oil

The stock fell -1.4% to $8.45 on Monday, slipping below its previous low from late 2022, and is now down -68% from its all-time high.

Blue Owl has posted 8 consecutive months of losses and just came out of its steepest quarterly decline on record.

Furthermore, short interest on the stock hit a record high in early March, as investors increasingly use Blue Owl as a proxy to bet against the $1.8-$2.0 trillion private credit market.

Median short interest in the S&P 500 is up to ~3.7% of total shares outstanding, the highest level in 11 YEARS.

The Nasdaq 100 is at ~2.7%, the highest in 6 years, while the Russell 2000 is at ~5.0%, the highest in over 15 years.

All three indexes have seen short interest rise sharply since mid-2024, accelerating further in 2026.

The last time short interest was this elevated across all three indexes simultaneously was during the 2010-2011 European debt crisis.

The Arab Light differential to Asia surged +$17 per barrel for May, to a record premium of $19.50.

This is the extra price Asian buyers pay on top of regional benchmarks to purchase Saudi crude.

This is DOUBLE the previous high of ~$9.50 during the 2022 energy crisis.

This comes as Saudi Arabia has been forced to reroute most exports to its Red Sea port of Yanbu, now shipping ~5 million barrels per day, or ~70% of pre-war volumes, through the alternative route.

Aramco has also shut most production of its Medium and Heavy crude grades, offering only Light and Extra Light barrels from Yanbu.

The premium was raised across all grades and all regions, including the US and Northwest Europe.

This is unprecedented.

Saudi Aramco just raised oil prices to Asia by the most on record

Gulf Cooperation Council countries produce ~6,159K metric tons of aluminum annually, making the region the 4th-LARGEST producer globally, according to the International Aluminium Institute.

By comparison, China leads at 44,219K, followed by Europe at 7,059K and Asia ex-China at 4,859K.

Iran's strikes on Persian Gulf aluminum plants have already sent prices surging over +10% since the start of the war.

Meanwhile, Emirates Global Aluminium, the region's largest producer, says it may take up to 12 months to restore full output at its Al Taweelah smelter in Abu Dhabi after an Iranian missile and drone attack forced an emergency shutdown.

Al Taweelah is one of the largest smelters in the world, producing 1.6 million tons of cast metal in 2025, or ~2.3% of global output.

The Middle East now represents ~9% of global aluminum production, but the impact is amplified because constraints elsewhere have already eroded inventories, leaving the market with little buffer.

Aluminum is used in everything from airplanes to food packaging and solar panels, meaning disruptions ripple far beyond the metals market.

This is no longer just an energy crisis, it is an industrial one.

The Iran war is sending the global aluminum market into crisis

Global visible oil inventories have fallen -162 million barrels since the start of the Iran war on February 27, erasing ~37% of the inventory built up in 2025.

Total inventories are down to 7,981 million barrels, declining at a rate of -10.2 million barrels per day over the last 7 days.

Floating storage from the Persian Gulf has collapsed by ~250 million barrels, as oil that would normally be in transit through Hormuz is no longer moving.

Asia excluding China and India has been the hardest hit on the landed side, with inventories falling sharply since early March.

Goldman Sachs has called this the largest oil supply shock on record, estimating cumulative losses could exceed 800 million barrels over a 6-week period if the Strait remains at current levels.

The global oil buffer is disappearing fast.

Is the world running out of oil?

Over the last 30 days, oil has shown a NEGATIVE correlation with nearly every major asset class, with global bonds at -0.67, developed market stocks at -0.55, emerging market stocks at -0.41, and Bitcoin at -0.28.

The only asset moving in the same direction as oil is the US Dollar, with a +0.45 correlation, as surging energy costs fuel Dollar demand globally.

Even gold, traditionally a safe haven during geopolitical crises, has had a -0.15 correlation with oil. 

Meanwhlie, the S&P 500 ETF, $SPY, and the United States Oil ETF, $USO, have moved in opposite directions in 38 out of the last 50 trading sessions, the highest in at least 20 years, surpassing the Great Financial Crisis record of 36.

Until oil prices stabilize, expect volatility across every asset class to remain elevated.

Oil is currently the single most important driver of global financial markets

Commodity Trading Advisors (CTAs), the algorithm-driven funds that buy and sell based on price trends, have sold -$184 billion in global equities over the last month, including -$55 billion in US stocks alone.

As a result, CTAs are now short -$47 billion globally and -$38 billion in the US, surpassing the April 2025 correction low.

With positioning this extreme, the selling is nearly exhausted, with just -$15 billion in estimated sales over the next week, even if the market goes nowhere.

However, if any positive headline appears, Goldman Sachs estimates CTAs would be forced to buy +$142 billion globally and +$61 billion in the US over the next month.

Any positive headline could trigger the largest systematic short squeeze in at least a year.

The Fed's cumulative losses, known as "deferred assets," sit at near a RECORD $245 billion.

This represents the gap between what the Fed pays commercial banks in interest on their reserves and what it earns on its bond holdings.

The losses began in 2022 when the Fed aggressively raised interest rates to fight inflation, making its borrowing costs higher than its investment returns.

Importantly, it will take the Fed YEARS to fully eliminate the losses and resume remittances to the Treasury.

Oracle's 5-year credit default swaps (CDS) surged to 198.18 basis points on Friday, the highest closing level EVER, officially surpassing the 2008 Financial Crisis peak.

The cost of insuring against Oracle's default has QUADRUPLED since mid-2025.

This comes as Oracle has become the most popular instrument for investors to hedge or bet against AI-related debt, with ~$120 billion of bonds in the Bloomberg US high-grade corporate bond index, the largest non-bank issuer.

Oracle also has the most-liquid investment-grade CDS, with average weekly trades topping $830 million.

Global equities are down -8.56% in March, on track for the worst monthly decline since September 2022, when global markets were deep in a bear market.

This comes as foreign investors have sold -$52 billion of Asian emerging market equities (excluding China) month-to-date, the largest monthly withdrawal on record.

This exceeds the previous record set during the 2020 EXODUS by +49% and the June 2022 outflows by +148%.

The largest withdrawals were posted in Taiwan, South Korea, and India, the countries most dependent on oil imports from the Middle East.

This comes as Asian economies make up ~80% of crude oil demand flowing through the Strait of Hormuz, which effectively remains shut, putting disproportionate pressure on the region compared to the rest of the world.

A strong US Dollar and a selloff in semiconductor stocks, driven by supply chain disruptions and concerns over the region's growth outlook, are adding further pressure.

March 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most brutal months for global markets in years.

Oman crude surged to a record ~$162 per barrel before dropping back to ~$119.

The Dubai benchmark, which directly influences Oman pricing, is normally set using 5 different types of crude oil.

This is why Oman crude oil prices have CRASHED

Tightened helium supply from Qatar is starting to affect semiconductor production, with companies scrambling to secure alternatives, according to Reuters.

Helium is a byproduct of natural gas processing and is critical in chipmaking for cooling, leak detection, and precision manufacturing, making the shortage highly disruptive.

Qatar produced ~63 million cubic meters of helium in 2025, roughly ~33% of global supply, and its Ras Laffan LNG facility, which produces helium, was recently damaged by an Iranian strike, threatening a major portion of the world’s supply.

As a result, producers and distributors are limiting shipments, with AirGas declaring force majeure and providing some customers only ~50% of normal monthly deliveries.

Healthcare customers are being prioritized, leaving chipmakers vulnerable to delays in sourcing helium.

If shortages persist, production cuts could ripple through electronics, automobiles, and smartphones. 

Chipmakers like TSMC, Samsung, and SK Hynix could be forced to slow or pause production, compounding an already strained supply chain for AI and high-end electronics.

The tech sector is already racing to secure alternative helium sources, including from the US, to keep production on track.
