There is a whole city to build, but the time is going to arguing about the names of the streets. ... If you sat someone down and talked to them about Bitcoin. Showed them code, network stats, etc ...
Then asked what do we need to do to make Bitcoin better? None of the things that are being used to divide Bitcoiners would be on that list. None
Portlandhodl makes a really good point here. As bitcoin grows it is inevitable that people you don't agree with work on it, use it, affect it.
As a bitcoiner, how do you stay focused on what matters?

The arguing shows that we care.
It needs to succeed so the strongest arguments should (in theory) rise to the top.

I mostly feel this way, but sometimes it does feel like we get so worked up about small stuff when we've got much bigger fish to fry (like, is anybody going to actually self custody here?)

I think the time was well spent (#976885) in the sense that we all learned a lot about each other. Maybe it didn't amount to anything technically, but this whole social consensus thing is kind of a big deal.

Bitcoin didn’t solve the governance and human cooperation problem. Unfortunately that will always exist

It helped though. The fact that it's still here is a testament to this: bitcoin aligned incentives in a way that has at least allowed it to become as big as it is.
Your broader point I sympathize with. Bitcoin has value because people want it.

Are you sure? I seen respected bitcoin people meltdown over this OP_Return deal? You still got the CTV folks wanting their OP code turned on in the code base.
I think many land mines are afoot and it will only get worse as more fiat comes into the network

scaling, liquid, ecash
It's always shitcoiners/scammers/retards that want everyone to get along

Do you think time spent arguing about the size of the op return limit is well spent?
reply
Depends how "well spent" is defined.
Yes if we consider it possibly enlightened a few observers as to what a disaster everyone involved is and that Bitcoin's resistance to change by two-legged animals is the only thing that gives it value.
No if we look at the substance, outcome, and how relatively few people seem to have learned anything.
Very much no if we consider that both sides are part of the same problem and sanity is largely silent.
As you may have guessed, I reside in an irrelevant 3rd column on that whole thing.

asking to solve the "larger issues" first is like asking the sherpas to make it easier to climb the mountains, before choosing to climb the mountain;
  • can u make the mountain shorter?
  • install more stairs!
  • give out prizes at checkpoints!
  • please get rid of the annoying ads along the way;
that's not how mountains are meant to be climbed; do the great work, and it'll get easier despite the challenges; otherwise have fun staying spiritually dead;
