Broncos 30 49ers 9
  • Great start to the game with 2s going against Denver's 1s on offense and partial 1s on defense. 49ers jumped out to a 9-0 lead with an early TD and then forcing Nix to intentionally ground the ball in the end zone for a safety. It was nice to see a DC that wasn't afraid to be a little aggressive on third down.
  • Mac Jones looked pretty good early but got absolutely blown up by Nik Bonitto twice on a series and got crossed up with rookie Jordan Watkins leading to an easy INT for the Broncos. Watkins has flashed but there is a reason Kyle hates rookie WRs. It's a tough playbook to learn and they screw up a lot. But they are going to need him. Jones took some responsibility for the mix up but Kyle put the blame on Watkins and said he missed the route, so Watkins is already flirting with the dog house despite his impressive 50 yard catch leading to the first TD.
  • For the most part the D held up well early bending but not breaking, leading to a couple field goals but once the 2s started to filter out the dam broke.
  • Depth issues beyond the starters and key backups on defense are clear. The 49ers 3s and 4s got absolutely torched. Huge mistakes allowing Stidham to break contain on a 3rd and 15 and run for a first down (come on guys that's not Lamar Jackson) and leaving a receiver completely uncovered for the Broncos first TD. Bad communication amongst the DBs (likely due to so many guys being in and out of practice due to nagging injuries). Offense did not help as they barely possessed the ball and kept the D on the field way too much.
  • Carter Bradley and Tanner Mordecai 9/20 for 53 yards, 2 INTs and a combined QB rating of 19.65 are not even preseason caliber NFL QBs. Just keep two QBs on the 53 man roster as the season will be a bust anyways if Purdy and Jones go down for any length of time. These guys were embarrassingly bad. Bradley threw his INT right at the Broncos linebacker 10 yards in front of him and Mordecai ran around in circles for 5 seconds before just chucking the ball up in the air right to a Broncos CB. I am not sure what he was doing, if he was trying to throw it out of bounds and it didn't quite get there but he had an easy 4 yard run for a first down to the sideline but instead spun back around and ran back to the middle of field.
  • Running game sucked. Granted were working with 4th-6th string running backs but the backup OLine guys were horrible run blocking. Lone bright spot was rookie undrafted FA Corey Kiner who had 10 carries for 45 yards. Broncos were selling out to stop the run knowing the 49ers didn't have capable QBs playing.
  • Biggest bright spots- rookie S Marques Sigle, undrafted FA DT Sebastian Valdes, veteran CBs Chase Lucas and Dallis Flowers
  • Biggest disappointments- T Spencer Burford, T Auston Pleasants were both terrible- Andre Dillard better get healthy quick and be capable otherwise the 49ers don't have a serviceable LT if Trent goes down. Rookie LB Nick Martin had a couple really good plays but missed a number of tackles, he needs to clean that up. Rookie DT Alfred Collins was disappointing. He routinely got pushed back on run plays. He missed rookie mini camp, OTAs due to the 2nd rounder contract dispute and it shows.
  • Biggest concern- More guys injured. The 49ers have managed to avoid major injuries so far this camp and preseason with just one player getting an injury that will likely carry over into the season but they have been decimated by minor nagging injuries- calfs, hamstrings, ankles, knees. I know they are really trying to protect guys this year because they know they don't have the depth to sustain a lot of major injuries but this is a team with a ton of new players that needs to get solid reps in practice and preseason but it has been a turnstyle of guys so far. That's concerning, especially on defense where you have a new DC and are relying on probably 6 or 7 new starters.
If we manage to stay healthy enough to field a team let's see how we look Thursday in joint practice and Saturday in the game against @Undisciplined's Raiders. You know Pete Carroll wants to beat his old nemesis. Should be fun.
Sats for all, GR
Stidham may not be Lamar Jackson, but he's a very capable QB and he plays with cajones gigantes. When he finished the season for Carr a couple years ago, he had the best first two games of any QB ever not named Brock Purdy.
reply
He is a good backup QB.

I was annoyed that they didn't keep him. Mostly because I believe in rewarding guys for excelling. Our team motto is "Commitment to Excellence" after all.
reply
Not much Excellence lately.
reply
And even less commitment

Will Trent stay healthy? Mcaffrey?
reply
Trent is going to miss time. That's the concern regarding Left Tackle. He will miss a few games for sure. I think CMC will stay healthy.
reply
lol remind me u said u think CMC will stay healthy
reply
Why do you think he won’t?
reply
“Injury prone”

He either seems to play a full season or miss a bunch of games. He has five seasons where he played the full season and he has four seasons where he missed a bunch of games. So I guess we will see which one we get this year.

Bills are dealing with this as well. I think all teams are in this boat. Training camp is brutal
reply
Agree it takes guys awhile to get into game shape and these injuries are part of that but the Bills probably don't need the reps as much. 49ers are going to have at least 4 new starters on D and up to 7 depending on how rookies play and who is healthy going into week 1. On offense its not as bad they will likely have just 2 new starters.

I should have cashed my SF ML bet early in the game at the 9-0 lead
reply
It was looking good for a brief moment. I was excited about the Defense and then 2.5 quarters of misery.

I forgot to add CB Darrell Luter Jr to biggest disappointments. Year 3 and he still sucks. So I guess it is not a disappointment anymore. ST only.
