It’s basically handball, except they play it with their feet.

Close, but the explanation is a bit more complex. Handball is based on a mesoamerican ball game that was played since around 1650 BC.
That game was played exclusively with their feet.
So handball is based on that, but with hands, and soccer is based on handball but with feet.
Fun fact, pickle ball is based on soccer but with paddles.
It's just amazing how these things morph over time.
