Was so frustrated with my fifth graders that I forced them to stand for 30 minutes and gave them a piece of my mind yesterday. Threw some of their files on the floor because they were missing certain worksheets.

Got called into the vice principal’s office today. She told me in no uncertain terms that I wasn’t supposed to do that because this constituted as corporal punishment. Throwing files also violated the dignity of my students.

Oops. Looks like I got carried away by my passion for teaching and overstepped certain occupational norms prevalent in the teaching service. Looks like I would have to rein in my brazen ways because they are deemed taboo for my new bosses’ liking.

I got reprimanded for my teaching on two occasions.

The first was because I re-used an old test, word for word. Even though the test a few years old, apparently some fraternity had gotten a copy of it and some students had studied off of it, and others who didn't have access to the test complained.

The second was because I was sitting down to teach one of my classes (it's because I use my ipad as a whiteboard projected onto the screen basically.) I didn't think it'd be a big deal because I still get up to point to the screen when necessary, but apparently a reviewer thought that sitting down while teaching makes me look lazy or something? So now I stand instead of sit while writing on the ipad.

I received the second comment as well. My Reporting Officer reported that some colleagues had reservations about whether I was engaging my students enough. But I think sometimes when I sit at the centre of the classroom to teach my classroom, this is when I have their absolute attention haha

Did your students have to sit for the exam again?

No, I forgot what we did as it was so long ago. I think since it was only a few students, we let it slide.

Oh, haha and how could I forget. I also got reprimanded because when we first returned to in-person class from COVID, I made my class half in-person half online. I thought I had the flexibility to do that, but apparently we were mandated to go fully in-person (had something to do with administrative rules on counting the number of face-to-face instructional hours)

Don't feel too bad. In our local public school district you would have been fired on the spot. It may sound harsh, and it is stupid, but then the union rep would work out a deal where the teacher would stay home and receive full pay and benefits for life.

We had a German teacher (he wasn't German himself) who was prone to massive rage outbursts if there was any fucking about in his class.

We all liked him and we are a little bit afraid of him, but there was a respect there, the special kind that only the fear of corporal punishment can inspire.

If I were the principal, i would have commended you, but who knows, kids and parents these days

I actually don’t think standing for 30 mins constitutes as corporal punishment, but I have learnt! Thanks for understanding where I am coming from - I do think kids need to be intimidated sometimes

I don't think you should punish your students, even though I don't think it was a punishment at all. Still, I hope this curb on your methods doesn't kill your desire to teach these disrespectful brats.

It’s understandable to feel frustrated, but physical or humiliating punishments can harm the teacher/student relationship
