Hey stackers, I’m in Mexico, at a resort:

  • everything is paid through credit cards
  • automated tips included that none of the workers ever see
  • extra charge for converting and charging US dollars (about 12%)
  • of course taxes
  • ATM doesn’t take my visa debit card, so can’t take out cash

I would love to pay the people, not the system. Sounds like an ideal opportunity to teach some folks Lightning. Which wallet should I recommend?

Easy setup and immediately accepting small amounts matter the most, so I’m thinking Wallet of Satoshi and they can later move it to a hw wallet once they understand more. Any better options?

Blue wallet is a good option.
But if you want to learn more about it, just read the blog from @Darthcoin

Blue wallet is a custodial wallet if you don't use your own node.

reply

Yes, I know. But you can not expect a beginner to have a node....

Bitcoin has to be more user-friendly, off course, knowing the risks involved.

reply

yes, that's why we need to see blue wallet as a custodial wallet for most of us.

just use phoenix and breez, or maybe more complex solutions like blixt or OBW.

muun is better option to any custodial wallet, and is as easy as you can find.

reply

You don't need to run a traditional full node to have self custody (Pheonix or Breez)

reply

Use a non custodial wallet like Blue wallet, Munn

reply

Muun is custodial for lightning.

reply

muun is non custodial, but they make a submarine swap to on chain for lightning transactions.

reply

No it's not

reply

Sorry, I'm wrong. It's non custodial but all payments are on-chain

reply

blue wallet is a custodial wallet when you use lightning without your node.

If this helps, Mexicans can use an exchange to cash out into fiat.

For example with Coinbase, cash out using a bank account, or with cash pickup -- e.g., at Oxxo, and I think even Walmart.

Coinbase introduces Cash Out at 37,000 physical locations in Mexico, including Oxxo

Other exchanges exist (e.g., Bit2Me), but I don't know the space or which ones are good or not.

You can use Remitly to send yourself a remittance in Mexico -- pick up at 7-eleven, Oxxo, etc. Remitly works for sending from the U.S., and 27 other countries. KYC required.

WHY do you teach them to go back to fiat shitcoin?!!!
IT'S A SIN!
OMG and you are "recommending" to use Conbase, the mother of all enemies of Bitcoin!
For fuck sake, why do you do this shit?
He asked about using LN wallet and you push him into shitcoinery fiat? WTF?
Teach how to use BTC not fiat.

/me Walks into closet where the S9 is humming away. Closes door behind me. Stands before the shelf holding the S9, looks at the LED light and whispers:

"Forgive me Satoshi, for I have sinned. This is my first confession. In the past hour I have suggested that in order to help a bitcoiner to persuade a stranger to accept bitcoin that the bitcoiner could mention to that stranger how they could -- if they wanted to, cash out into local fiat. For my penance, I will re-read the white paper three times, and will orange-pill two strangers in hopes that action might help towards making up for my transgression."

"As far as suggesting Conbase, ... I acknowledge that was a mortal sin and I pray that I will not be damned to a life on fiat for the rest of all time."

reply

FWIW Mexico City at least has a few Bitcoin ATMs. Likely to be others around the country too.

reply

So knowing that they can get pesos using their bitcoin might hellp in persuading them to accept your bitcoin.

Otherwise, the method to get yourself some pesos for spending using "remittance to yourself" could be an alternative for you.

Looks like Remitly is who Coinbase is using for "last-mile" delivery into Mexico. So you can probably do that "remittance to yourself with cash pickup" if you have a Coinbase account too. I think, but I'm not sure.

Enjoyed your detailed n thorough review! Great read

Just use Muun. It's so easy.

I think we have 3 tiers:

Tier 1: CustodialTier 1: Custodial

Example: Wallet of Satoshi
For who: doesn't really care about self sovereignty, wants an easy solution, wants convenience. Introduce first time users, who don't show any interest in trying to learn more. keep an open door in case they wanna learn later, you can upgrade to tier 2.
For what: pocket change, daily spending

Tier 2: Semi non custodialTier 2: Semi non custodial

Example: phoenix
For who: someone who is interested in self sovereignty and wants to learn more about it. Someone who wants to learn how btc-ln works, at least superficially. Someone who is willing to give up some convenience for a bit more control.
For what: Daily spending

Tier 3: Fully non custodialTier 3: Fully non custodial

Example: Bitcoin core+LND+Zeus
For who: someone who wants to go down the rabit hole
For what: for being reckless

I would say BitcoinBeach Wallet. Trust them more than WoS who are regulated in Australia (maybe I'm wrong here) super easy, low fees, stable sats option for beginners who fears volatility etc....

reply

BBW its from a french company, not very different than WoS on regulations,
both are cool but its always better to get use to non custodial wallet right away as they are supper easy to use too.

reply

Don't think Galoy is french even if Burtey its CEO is. I believe they are an American commany (according to what I just search) but you are right, not very different with regard to regulation. Of course non custodial is better but to onboard people I think it's imperative to have something which work well, fast and cheap...And honnestly Phonix is great but takes to long to setup for newcomers IMO

reply

Pheonix or Breez

reply

check phoenix, breez and muun.
all non custodial, you don't know when you are going to be rug pulled on the custodial wallets. just try to ignore them.

reply

Breez.
Not sure if it's better but I have used it a quite long time without any problems. Also very easy for the beginners.

reply

Take a look at the result of this pool, too.
Not many people replied, but nobody votes for Muun.

reply

Electrum, Phoenix, Wallet of Satoshi only for small amounts, maybe for learning, and then go for a non custodial one.

Not Muun, ever.

reply

Electrum and Phoenix are non-custodial though.

reply

Yes, they are. That's one of the reasons why I highly recommend them, and also to go to them shortly after practicing with WoS with smaller amounts.

reply

I think you should also start a new threat asking, what about Muun

Why we don't do an exercise? Download Blue Wallet, Wallet of Satoshi and Muun. Send me here 3 invoices for 2000 sats. I will pay them, and you let us know which wallet provide you the best experience.
