Besides custodial lightning like WoS, the smoothest and most problem-free experience I've had with self-custodial LN in the IRL wilds is Phoenix and it's not even close.
I've seen people use Zeus very easily around me but for some reason txn take a while and often fail, forcing me to resync graph and whatnot. It might be an issue with my phone setup though. Wish it worked better.

Sadly, I left Lugano before having an opportunity to try other wallets.

If you were traveling, were you on Wifi or some kind of temporary eSIM? Wonder if connectivity issues can arise from using those, or if most LN issues are something else.

I was on regular cellular with a reasonable signal strength. No temporary SIM or eSIM. MUUN was super quick to open, show balance, read the QR code, and start the transaction.
I believe the slowness is a result of the box being used by the Lugano merchants. MUUN is super fast on all the online transactions I've ever done. I would like to hear the experience of other people in Lugano.
