If you’re of a certain age (really old) National Lampoon’s Animal House was probably one of the funniest movies you ever saw. I was thinking about my Stacker News territories recently, and this scene came to mind:
I have been struggling with ways to grow my territories. For ~bitcoin_beginners, I decided early on to give away sats for the best posts weekly, give those posts some exposure, and attach it to a newsletter that contains helpful resources to those first learning about bitcoin.
The results:
Not good. My ~Politics_And_Law territory, which I have basically ignored and allowed to develop on its own, consistently beats my beginners territory. This is not all about bitcoins and sats. (100 sats to the stacker who precisely pinpoints the Godfather reference) Engagement, content, and quantity are all usually better in ~Politics_And_Law. I know there are other reasons at play here, and I didn’t start these territories to become a sats king, but still. It’s a little frustrating.
Therefore, I have decided to go with what has never worked in the past, and quadruple down on my poor business decision. I will now award 1000 sats weekly to the top post in the following territories, and 250 sats each to the remaining posts in the top five:
Details about when the new policy will start will be posted in each territory.

I gave you some extra, because I get to watch the scene again.

Yeeeeehaaaaw, better start posting those sweet, wonderful reviews!

I am disappointed it hasn’t gone better for you with Bitcoin beginners. I imagined a great aggregator or Bitcoin educational resources where all the well known Bitcoin educators reposted their tutorials, videos etc. I think it has fallen victim to being too similar to the behemoth Bitcoin territory. You probably lose a lot of potential posts and discussion because people just post in Bitcoin instead.
reply
Yeah, that's exactly what I think too. It's really okay. I'll keep trying different stuff. I'm not in a rush.
reply
The post fee is higher than ~bitcoin, so that could be a barrier.
Would it be a thinkable outcome for you that ~bitcoin_beginners is better as a series of recurring newsletters and aggregation posts, and not a territory?
reply
Once sub territories are a thing it probably makes sense that bitcoin beginners, lightning, mining etc all become subs of Bitcoin.
reply
You might be right with both suggestions. I responded to you with a little more detail as a nostr pm.
reply
What app do you use? I don't see any new messages.
Nostr DM is such a poopy show haha
reply
I use a few. I sent it with Primal. I'll try amethyst. Let me know which one you use. Just keep in mind I'm not set up for Damus android yet.
reply
I use amethyst. Also checked with coracle but nothing there either.
reply
I just sent with amethyst. Did you set up amethyst DM relays?

The newsletter has been fantastic I want to say! Absolutely crushing it with that!

This is my kind of thinking!

I'm amazed that Animal World hasn't been thriving?! I always see posts and would have thought it was going nuts!
Since I tend to dog sit a lot I will have to post more of my pupventures there!
reply
Honestly I'm fine with Animal World. I enjoy it myself, and I don't really expect it to break even any time soon. Bitcoin beginners is really the only one I'm disappointed in. The post is half kidding. I really want to give new stackers a way to earn some sats that will benefit us all in the long run.
reply
Bitcoin beginners has to compete with ~bitcoin. I have a feeling you lose some number of posts to people just defaulting to posting in bitcoin.
reply
Yes. @grayruby pointed that out too. I'll just keep trying different things. If it all falls flat, I could always rename the territory and head in a different direction.

I see what you're going for though with BTC Beginners because getting started vs people who understand the space is quite dramatic
reply
So you think it is a rewarding content issue?
reply
I think it adds an incentive, of course, but also some fun and a little competition.
reply
Unfortunately, the rewards will only attract malicious actors that intent to play the system for their own benefits. Reward should be hidden, not used as a way to market SN.
Tell me which platform you know, including famous ones, YT, OF, SS and others that are flooding content creators with fiat, that is marketing using a "join us, we will pay for your content".
I'm glad the reward board was removed, hopefully the first step toward better ethics around here. All these rewards ad contests are simply anti-ethical, anti-moral... they will ruin SN in the long term, making it only a betting platform for scammers.
reply
So I guess zapping your reply is out of the question?
reply
you do whatever you feel it's the right thing. I was simply sharing my thoughts.
reply
Exactly
reply
Your territories do not look are doing that bad compared with others. In the past year, respectively at position:
You had great ideas when setting them up. More than {zaprank} (that can be easily hacked) or {revenue}, i'd look at {engagement}.
reply
Thanks. Seriously, for beginners I have rewarded top posts since early on. I'm trying to incentivize quality without attracting bad actors, as you point out. Honestly, I don't disagree with everything you wrote. That's why the award is modest. That coupled with SN's sybil fee, won't make it very easy to game, or worth the effort. I also reserve the right not to award anything, and to ignore the zaprank.
Also, do you think v for v has value?
We are all experimenting. But I think we just lack people. SN is so niche. If /when the development team works on growth then I think it will be the tide that lifts all boats.
That and sats get so expensive people will look to platforms like this one to earn a few from the new sat whales.
reply
I decided to just subscribe to ~bitcoin_beginners and zap & answer people. The best help each of us can give is to actually help people, or tag people that we know can help, and give visibility to questions and good content. That's what that territory is for.
reply
This is something Darth coin does extremely well.
reply
I fully expect to tag Darth on issues that need deep LN knowledge because I'm really just an L1 fossil.
reply
Agree completely. In the mean time, we play around trying new things

It may be a misunderstanding on my part, but I think ~bitcoin_beginners is a place for beginners and tutorials, while ~bitcoin is for experts and general content.
This approach will encourage more interaction, I will be ready to validate the good and punish the bad.
reply
You expressed it better than I could.
