Just got started with Bitcoin Knots version v29.1.knots20250903 running on my home laptop (Ubuntu 24.04).
It is still synchronising with the Blockchain, and I am about 50% done. But when I open the Settings->Options, I see a tab called Mining which shows several options to Mine transactions, set fees etc.
I always thought Knots is a node/wallet and not a mining software, was I wrong? Can Knots, by itself, really mine (as in, guess the nonce to match the block hash with a specific pattern) with a non-zero probability?
If so, how do I take advantage of it? I am running from a laptop, which I do not keep on, all the time, but I want it to run Knots (in the background) whenever I am working on it, as my small service to the community. But the mining tab does not give me any place to input a Bech32 address where it can send the Block reward, should it find one, in the off chance. How can I configure the mining tab for that?

Can Knots, by itself, really mine
Yes, using CPU. You can test it on a local regtest chain as the functionality has been retained for the test suite.
with a non-zero probability?
Non-zero yes, but extremely close to zero and extremely energy inefficient compared to ASICs. I doubt that anyone has found a mainnet block with CPU mining in the past decade.
If so, how do I take advantage of it?
You can't because it's non-competitive and considered a waste of compute. If you're looking to learn more about how it works, you could mine testnet for a bit where you actually may find a block.

I think even on testnet it would be pointless. I don't know why, but it looks like some people mine testnet with ASIC's.
4PH on worthless coins.

Thanks. That's what I get for being lazy and not checking.
Maybe stackers can make a learning environment w/ regtest as a hack.

Well... I didn't know you could mine on Knots so thanks!

You can mine on Core too...
