You got it! The mirror test works on animals that use sight as their main sense.

One issue with the mirror test is that not all animals have sight as their primary sense.

If you were given an analogue of the mirror test based on smell, would you pass it?

Why you should assume that even the simplest animals are conscious

I’ve always thought all animals have some level of consciousness and intelligence — even if we humans just can’t really decode it. Another interesting topic is self-awareness. I don’t think a lot of animals have that. You can actually test it with the mirror test.
