You're walking on the sidewalk and by your pace, you can tell that your next step will land on a little bug critter, do you slightly adjust your foot to spare the little guy? 1
This is as minimal effort scenario of "saving" vs killing a bug I could think of where you're presented with the options and make a choice.
I'll usually save larger bugs if they wind up somewhere they shouldn't. We'll also vacuum them up in the Dyson and where live in the vacuum canister with other bugs until it's dumped.
Flies 2 and mosquitos are KOS though, I guess there's an annoyance factor at play there.

Are you a saver, ignorer, or exterminator?

Footnotes

  1. Let's assume no residue is left on your shoe lol
  2. Interesting Air Force concept video from 16 years ago about mechanical spying flies.
I only kill biting insects when they land on me or stinging insects that infest areas we use.
Otherwise, my approach is to just leave them be.

I don't, I just kill them. Although non-poisonous spiders I often leave be on the theory that they'll kill other bugs for me.
My son, though, is definitely a soft hearted boy. He doesn't like it when we kill bugs and prefers that we move them outdoors.

I kill those entering my home. And those landing on me. And those hitting my plants. I kill. To be clear, I do ignore them to the point I have to kill them cause they are suicidal. And even so, I normally try to save bees and butterflies and ladybugs, etc. So I am all of them. P.S.: I hate spiders and wasps the most.

Hey, you're the exterminator then, haha, I wouldn't want to show up in your garden.
reply
Hahaha! Honestly, I’m all three (saver, ignorer, exterminator), just depends on the situation. Out on the street I’m more of a saver or just ignore it, but at home? Total exterminator. The only thing I don’t completely wipe out at home are spiders because let’s be real, they actually help get rid of other insects! Hahaha!
reply
Yep, we make an alliance with the spiders as well.
reply
I understand you perfectly.

This post hits home. As a child I was a notorious bug killer. The tortures I devised make me sad now. I drive my family nuts because I refuse to kill insects. I just can't do it anymore. I don't fear insects, so I'm the designated spider, beetle, and cricket remover in our home. I carefully bring them outside rather than murdering them these days.
BTW- I don't kill lantern flies, which makes people furious.

As a child I loved nature and insects, I never harmed them.
